Horn was accorded an attentive hearing ,by a large attendance of electors at Lawrenco last night. Tho speaker having made 'feeling reference to the late Mr. Bennet, Said three 'seats had been lost by the .Soutli and gained, by the North Island. It was a great pity there was a .-tendency, of young people to : rush to the- North. . This 'demoralised'-districts,'.but'iii a fow years the population would return to Otago. He was the . Government 'nominee. Dr., Chappie had merely ■ eomo to feel the pulse of the people. If they were to vote for the Government- they must vote for him. As. long as Otago railways wore confined,to the coast close settlement was hindered. ' Between Lawrence and Coal Creek were Crown'lands that it was a crying shame to keep locked up. He supported the Lawrence-Roxburgh Railwav, and if returned would see every penny 'voted spoilt. He urged the construction of the Otago Central. The .Government must give that land for close settlement. Very little of tho prospecting vote had come, to Otago. This sum should be handed to the locnl bodies of'the goldfiolds, who would be always approachable. ■ He favoured free selection, .of l?,nd with- the right of purchase, but urged the Government to throw oyen waste lands to a greater extent. . ( Ho would oven £0 so for as to grant free passages to - desirable immigrants. , He ■favoured moderate borrowing for public: works.' If Socialism meant dragging all to one level,,ho would fight it, but if it meant Stato ownership ho -wr.a Socialist. Ho would heartily support a moasure providing a pension for oyeryone at a certain ago by receipt of a small sum annuslly. It would ennourngo thrift. Ho was before them as a local man. and would remind them that, in voting for him they, voted for tho Government. The candidate answered, a number of questions. A hearty vote of confidence was carried. It wr.s resolyed that Mr. Horn was a fit and proper person to represent the Tuapeka, electorate.
