STARVING STOCK FLEET.
The remarkable movement in' the transit • of stock from Victoria to New South Walc3 pastures by steamer has-assumed largo proportions, and a fleet of steanuvs is now engaged in the' traffic. .Some of these are devoted exclusively to this business, and have been s.pecialiy fitted up for the purpose, i and carry llio" stock so well that th-s percentage of loss is trifling. So far the destination to which all these steamers aro .sent, is, New--' castle. The first consignment of stock from Melbourne to Newcastle was made in tho ■ Winfleld on April 10, snd consisted of 204 cattle and 2000 sheep, and shipments havo since been made every few days. • Tho aggrogate number sent from. April 10 to May 11 inclusive was 21,367 cattle, 13,520 sheep, !and 10l horses. A feature of tho traffic is . that most of tho stock shipped is from Gippsland, where it is 'bought by speculators and dealers from stockowners who aro short of feed. There are still numbers of stock coming forward from Gippsland for shipment. ■
