Thoy reported that>in':the' old workings above' No. Il mine i where ;the;; trouble has occurred they found water, to' a" depth of 4ft.-, extending som'o 3} 1 chains'in'length .and 3" chains in width.' 'In V regard to No. I mino the. inspectors'reported. th^tV they, found ; water injilaces 12ft. ,deep. They tilso inspected the Harris mine above Nbjj ly.and found that in ...some abandoned "workings there existed a stretch of water about fivo chains in length and 3} chains in width,; and the . shallowest part was sft. . '.deep. / At'the back end of this' volume of water 'is Harris's boundary,' about 6 jft. thick;;.', Mr; .Cnristie said ho had about hall tf chain .of boundary on his side. In regard to this- there, was danger, when the men •started 1 to work .through, to the pillars of wood, of the 'waters in the abandoned work-! / ings above breaking through. The check ~ inspectors emphasised.;'tb'at men could return 1 to work with" safety if'proper supervision wero exercised bv the management: A : niotibn'was unanimously carried in tho following terms,. J That tho men do not l return to work., until Mr. Christie gives written ilotico .that lie will have .all the 'water -drawr.. off as stated to -..the check inspectors; and. that no pillars will bo worked to . tlio rise until such times as the water is properly drairied, off." ■ A .deputation was appointed tp wait on Mr. Christie and got his signature.' This . -was obtained and the men .accordingly returnexl to :work, and the shift was started at midnight.
