MODEL DAIRY.

- THE WOBURN ENTERPRISE. • : The opening cercmony of the Woburn Dairy at Lower Hufct took place oil Saturday afternoon, in tho presence of. a small gathering, in rather unfavourable 1 weather. / Dr. Mason, tho Hon. Dr. Collins, Mr., Gilruth ; (chief Government veterinarian), Mr. Clif:ton (chiof stock inspector), Mr. Aston (Government chemist), and Mr. Petorkin'-(Mayor of _ Hutt) - wero among thoso present., A arizzlo_ would put a damper upon the finest dairy in the world, and the Woburn event, did not entirely, cscape tho ill effects. Even though tho importance, of the aims of Woburn, as outlined in the Dominion on Saturday. morning', were fully realised, the enthusiasm of/the visitors was unavoidably 'held down by tho heavy hand of'the weathorf.

Tho first, operation . witnessed was tho milking. Tho Lawrence-Kennedy machines were set to work in the concreted, whitewashed'shod, the. cows coming to the hales in four mobs of about ten cows each. Two double machines, were in' uso, and as th6y click-clicked to tho pulsation caused by-the engine the milk passed from udder along the tubes .straight to tho covered' can, by any contact with the outer air. The head; dairyman baled up the cows, and attached'tho machines, and two young women followed for-the stripping. • If the concrete floor became soiled the filth was quickly flooded away,.with a few bucketfuls>of water from tho artesian bore. The ' subsequent cooling and bottling of the milk in tho cold .room wero also witnessed, and here Mr. Peterkin, in a very brief soeech, performed tho opening ceremony. The various prooesses, to ensure extreme purity in the bottled milk, were examined and-discussed, and the/company afterwards moved to the Belle Vuo Hotel, where favourable opinions of-the new -enterprise were expressed over .light refreshments. There wero 'no formal speeches. '■ ■ . , ' - ■ MAUKICEVILLE BUTTER FACTORY. MANAGER GIVES SOME ADVICE. Tho Mauriceville West Co-operative Butter Factory will close down for the season to-day (Monday) (writes our Wairarapa correspondent): Mr. J. Brash, the manager, stated that he quite • expected the output to bo fully thirty tons'snorter than it was the previous year. /At ono timo.in tho drought' period, it was thought the factory would have to closo down much earlier, but during the past" six weeks tho supply had come along ,very : well. #;Mr.; Brash .emphasised tho need of the farmers in his district growing! winter _feed for their stock. It was tho regular thing in Southland, although he was not in .favour of-the turnipfeoding which was in vogue'in .tho Southern province, and which undoubtedly tainted ths butter, j. Mi\ Brash .was quite-certain, howover, that farmers in,his district should do. something, otherwise _ they ■ stoqd a; chance of having a 'very bad time. -In proof of Mr. Brash's contention it was noted that -dairy stock in- Mauriceville West ..are,riot- looking in too good condition,' and the pastures are not-flourishing as they are in. other portions of-the Bush and Wairarapa. / .

The Ballance Co-operative Dairy Company (says.a Pahiatua Press "Association message) :has"paid o'lit' £2300 for milk supplied .'dhriiig April. ■ Considering' tho season, the supply was well' maintained,''although' somo' sixteen' tons less butter' was"' manufactured' than in April last year.

TOM MACKENZIE CHEERFUL. - Claiming to ; speak with an intimate knowledge of .the ,Home market (says ; a Dun■edin Press' Association message), Mr. Thomas Mackenzie told his constituents on Friday night that he f saw no justification for talk/about depression. . It was true that, from wool ..and gum and ■ hemp we might have some' two or three millions/less this year'than last year, but last year's exports were three millions in excess of the penultimate year, and there was no degression then. True, our wool .was back, but he saw no justification for concluding that it would not improve in price. The wool market, and in lesser- degree the fibre market, was; said the speaker, affected ;by the crisis in New York to a 1 great extent, but there was every reason to suppose that the wool market would improve. He had given the question of ■■ our products most careful thought,- as he was in touch with firms dealing with these interests., DROUGHT IN TASMANIA. ■ STOCK STARVING.'
