THE WINNING OF CANADA
WOLFE AND MONTCALM. BRITAIN TO PRESENT A MEMORIAL., BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPIftIOHI. (Rec. May 17, 4.14 p.ml) London, May 16. ; At a meeting at the Mansion House it was ■ resolved, on the motion of Lord Crewo (Secretary for the Colonics), seconded by Lord Roberts,- to support tho presentation', on behalf of tho people, of Great Britain, of a memorial of Generals Wolfe and Mont-' calm, as ft birthday gift to Canada; . ALTERNATE VICTORY-EQUAL HONOUR. It is not indicated what form the memorial is to take. Earl Grey, Governor-General of Canada, who is a great' behind tho Champlain tercentenary and the movement for preservation' of tho Anglo-French Canadian battlefields, has suggested that it might bo possible to erect on the point, of Quebec first visible tb a steamer coming up" the-St. Lawronco a colossal statue of tho Angel Of Peace, with arms outstretched; offering to clasp to her heart etory now arrival from Europe. Tho immigrant on his arrival at Nov.' York, said' Lord Groy, was greeted by- the Statue 1 of Liberty. The immigrant to Canada, when he looked up from his steamer to the Plains of Abraham, whore the fato of America was decided, saw no inspiring monument but a gaol, which actually stood on the sacred spot wnero Wolfe gave up his life. Tho battlefiold of Sainto J?oye, whoro the French in 17G0, after a desparate battle, .defeated the British, and whence they would have recaptured Quebco if a British fleet had not suddenly appeared, adjoined tlio Plains of Abraham. It was proposed to include tho moro important parts, of tho two battlefioldg in a national park, to bo called King Edward's Park. ; Thus tho battles in'which tho contending races wore alternately victorious, and, in both of which victor and vanquished woro .ontitled to equal honour, would bo 'fittingly coinwcmmorated.
