ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. Century.—The (second day. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Acceptances for tho Hawko's Bay Trotting Club's meeting closo to-night. Next Saturday racing takes place at Oamaru, Wanganui, and Auckland. Although tho Lochiel horse Ghoorka was nominated for hurdlo races at Auckland and AYanganui, it is improbable that ho will bo seen racing at all this season, as ho is suffering with a sprained stifle joint. Iliflemaid is doing satisfactory track work at Masterton, and may be racing again by next month. Bonny Glen, who broko down badly at the Auckland Cup meeting, is in active work again, .and appears likely to undergo a satisfactory preparation while tho tracks are soft. Moscow is being schooled over the hurdles at Levin, and Aorangi.is being prepared for tho big country. Judging by Aorangi's finished displays of jumping at Feilding and Trentham no should develop into a useful 'chaser. ■ Winning jockeys at tho Ashburton meeting were: F. E. Jones (three), It. W. King (three), L;. G. King (two), "A. Chapman, V. Cotton, H.' Donovan, and J. M'Cluskey. j Eurus and Canton have both accepted in tho Wanganui Steeplechase. They aro expected through on Tuesday.
. Winning jockeys at ths Egmont Racing Club's meeting were: S. Reid (four), W. Price (two), L. Wilson, Clareburt, W. Baynor, F. Porter, J. Lyford, and W. Faliey ono each. Lupulite, with list., is top-weight in the Tokaratu Handicap at Oamaru, and has to give away as much as 4st. 71b. to some of the candidates. The son of Lupin has only got to win one or two more races and he will bo carrying as much weight as Machine Gun used to.. At a meeting of the newly-formed Wanganui Trotting Club, hold last week, it was reported that a satisfactory reply had been received from the Wanganui Jockey Club in regard to tho use of the racecourse. The Jockey Club has granted permission for the first meeting to be held on the course, arid the Trotting Club will be allowed to form k now track inside tho training- tracks. . Notable defections from the Wanganui Steeplechase are. Lull and Pawa. •After all, Paritutu will not be seen at the W T anganui mooting,' but I see lie has paid up for the Maiden Hurdles at Takapuna. .He has 12st. 51b-: there,, but the horses opposed to him have not much form; to recommend them, arid, there is a drop of 2st. 51b. from Paritutu to the' next - horse, Montigo. Perhaps Paritutu's owner thinks it v would be giving tho .horse too much j work to. raco him, at Wanganui on' tlie Monday and then take him through to Ellorslie for the following Saturday. By : going ' through to tho Takapuna meeting this week tho Castor gelding will certainly get' a better chance to do his best in the- Great Northern Hurdles. Black Reynard, Gold Dust, Lady Hune, Capulet, and Asteroid all ; declined their engageinpnts at Wanganui. Lady Hune is engaged at the Takapuna mooting, and may appear in the Maiden Steeplechaso in preference to tlie hurdld events.» Tho South Charitable Trotting Club, which molds a meeting at Greytown every year, has in' tho past given considerable 'sums - of money' towards tho maintenance of 'tho Greytown Hospital.
Last year there were eleven starters', in tho Wanganui Steeplechase. This year there will :be the'same number; if all tho acceptors go to tho post, but in' : tho May Hurdles and tho Century ; Hurdles the- fields will hot , bo half as big as" tliey were last year. ' Bookmakers are notified that applications for licenses to bet at the Hawke's Bay Trotting Glub's. Meeting on, Monday next will bo received to-day by tho Secretary, Mr./ J. L. S. Richardson, Waipukurau. The fee is £7, and 10s. for a clerk. A. M'Connon, J. Hall,: and T. Pritchard have each ridden thirteen winners over tho jumps this season. Pritchard has also ridden fifteen winners oh the flat. Truganini 1 . has ' been entered , for tho Oamaru Qup, jono-j mil®, and - tho Stewards' Handicap,' six furlongs, at tho-North Otago Jockey Club's Meeting. Taking Trentham form las a guide, she appears to bo particularly well treated through Cross Battery, but the latter lias won a double 'at Ashburton since tho Wellington 1 meeting, and is consequently treated with a little more respect than she would otherwise havo been.' ' T?ho Gold Reef gelding Contender is''also entered at the Oamaru meeting, and is not unduly' burdened.'with weight. He appears to bo gradually coming back to his form of last autumn, and if the'' climate of tho South. Island does not interfere with ' his health and constitution he' should get on the winning list beforo the season closes. If both To Kainui and Repulso aro started in the Slay Hurdles at Wanganui-it will bo interesting to see how the form at Trentham will wdrk out. Repulse beat To Kainui oil both days -at Trentham. The first day, when tho distance was a mile and threequarters, Repulse wa3 receiving 31b., ■ and now Te Kainui. ( has to concede him 51b. ,1 ■ ' ™~ : SOUTH WAJRARAPA TROTTING CLUB'S ( NOMINATIONS. WANGANUI TRAININC NOTES. (BY TELEGRAPH.—PP.ESB ASSOCIATION.) Wanganui, May 16. Waipu (9st.- 91b.) was accidentally omitted from the list of acceptors for tho Century Hurdles. 'Tho weather was flue for training operati6ns this morning, and the tracks were in splendid, ordor. Fretwork jumped cxcellontly a couple of rounds of, schooling fences. Lull camo to grief at the second fence, but was remounted, and did two rounds, dwelling at oacli obstacle. Crucinolla, Irish Rillo, and Chaso Mab ran five furlongs, the two firstnamed finishing together in lmin. sscc. They were not extended. Mahoo and lielario covered a mile together fast, shaping well. Daisy Paul sprinted six furlongs pleasingly. . A .lot,of others did useful wort, including Lothair, .Hp Kainiii,'- and Besearcflt
