INSPECTION OF POTATOES.
MINISTERIAL TELEGRAMS, r (BY TELEGRAPH. —-ritESS ASSOCIATION.) ' Duncdin, May 14. In rogard to the recent trouble over tho inspection of potatoes at tho port of arrival, instead of at the port of departure, the .following telegrams have been received by Sir. E. Moss:— _ "I am advised by the Minister for Agriculture, that inspection does not' apply to N.Z. potatoes, but to potatoes from beyond tho sea, so that thero must bo somo misunderstanding about tho matter. —J. G. Ward." Tho Commissioner of Customs (tho Hon.' J. A. Millar) telegraphed as follows:—"As yet I have received no information as to the reasons for the application respecting potatoes. On receipt of tho samo I will go carefully into tho matter." . Merchants, arc of opinion that tho inspection of potatoes at the port of arrival only applies'.to Australian potatoes'; hut failing defmitn information they aro disinclined to take any responsibility on their own shoulders. As a consequence, business is practically dead.
