WADESTOWN TRAMWAYS
RESULT OF THE POLL. THE MAIN ROAD ROUTE WANTED. The poll of ratepayers in connection with a lino of tramway!from Wadestown to the city waa held yesterday. There wero two polling booths, ono at the Town Hall and one at Wadestown. A great deal of interest has been taken in; the quostion, and this is shown by the voting. . _ There wero throe alternative routes:— The Highland Park, which is 73 chains longer than the Main Road route, the Main Road, and tho tunnel. The tunnel project never received much favour; and tho issuo was really between tho Highland Park (through the Rhodes estate), and the Main Road tonte. The polling was as follows:—, Town Hall. Wadestown. Total. Highland Park 31 11 42 Main Road ... 54 153 , 207 Tunnel 26 11 37 Tho decision was thus very decisively in favour of tho Main ,Road route. The poll closed at 7 o'clock last night, and tho result was declared at 7.12 by tho Returning Officer, Mr. Jamos Ames. Tho, poll does not mean as yet that tho tramway will bo built by this route, for the matter has to go before the City Council, and a loan will bavo to be authorised. Tho quostion will then /arise, as to what comes within tho rating district, and, if the lino goes along tho routo chosen hy tho Wadestown people, tho Rhodes estate, which pays about half tho Wadestown rates at present, mav escape taxation. When seen on tlio subject, tho Mayor (tho Hon. Ti W. Hislop) said that the routo would probably be ill accordance with tho wishes of the majority at the poll, lint tho poll did not decide tho matter. He and tho Councillors and the City Engineer were in favour of the' Highland Park routo for reasons of cconomy.
