WANTED: A WILD LIFE

ENGLISH LADS' NAIVE EPISTLE. CAREERS SOUGHT IN NEW ZEALAND. Some curious letters are received at times by the Labour. Department, but a naive communication received yesterday 'will not soon bo surpassed for unconscious humour. Tho. letter reached tho Department indirectly. It was addressed "To tho editor of tho public; or farming paper, Wellington, Now Zealand. Very urgent." By a brilliant inspiration of tho Postal Department the communication was transmitted to the Editor of Publications, Agricultural Department, who passed it on to the Department of Labour. Tho letter reads:— "Dour Editor, —Wo three English subjects are not at all satisfied with our present mode of life. Our nature is of a wild life, as farming, or, as a cowboy's life, tho latter particularly. We should ho greatly, pleased if you would kindly advertiso this in various local . papers. Our present occupation is that of a clerk in a largo lace warehouse, >which _ does not suit us so much as a - wild lifo would do. We should all liko to work on the samo farm, as we liavo . all been cliums the greater part of our . life. ( If any gentleman farmer wishes to take' an interest in us we should liko him to pay our passage over there, and we should fully reward the gentleman with small instalments from our'wages. ' Any gentleman that may need us, I should be very glad if lie would writo to • mo and let me know full particulars, including wages. It would suit us to earn a proportion wage, and live in: together. Please state in letter what port to land at, and kindly meet us oil coming off the steamer. Our ages are respectfully as follows:—20, 20, and 18. "Hoping you will look favourably on, our letter of application, etc." ' The Department is replying that farm positions are obtainable in New Zealand, but that the conditions of Dominion life. do not iucludo the riding of wild mustangs;, with pistols in one's belt, and that getting up at 5 a.m. to milk cows is not entirely enjoyable. . ; ; ■ .. i The Department has also received a letter from'-a draper's .assistant' in. St. Petersburg, aged 24, " healthy and generally considered fairly smart," who wants to know whatihis prospects would be in.. this' trade 'in ' New Zealand. There are at present vacancies in: tho trade.- Another letter comes from a cabinet-maker in England who has'a' fancy for rabbit-trapping,-and is. burning to 'take up that fascinating employment' in Now Zca-' land. The Department's answer will be virtually " Don't."
