WOOTTON ASHORE. , The small Kaiapoi trader Wootton had the misfortune to striked on a sandbank at Stewart's Gully, near Kaiapoi, last. Sunday. She was loaded with timber from Collingwood at the time, and an unsuccessful attempt was made to float her off on Monday's' tide. It was expected that the attempt on Tuesday would prove successful. : ; TIMBER FOR' NELSON WHARF. - Tho Maoriland S.S." Company's steamer. Ennerdale has been chartered to: carry timber from Wellington to Nelson'for the wharf construction works which are in progress there. The timber is coming to' Wellington from Australia by the steamer Hamstead, and the quantity to be transhipped here will be approximately 600,000 ft. . THE MAITAI AND,MONOWAI. A Pres? Association 1 tolegram from Dunedin states that, owing to the Maitai's mishap, arrangements have been made for the Monowai to leave Lyttelton to-day for Sydney, via Co.ok-Strait. The Tarawera, which is bringing Maitai's passengers and cargo, is 1 due 'at Dunedin on .Friday, leaving for Auckland in the afternoon. Mails for Sydney'will thus leave Wellington on time-table date, and .the.■ Diinedin-Auckland, service- will remain - unbroken. ' . THE WOOL SHIPS. 'The barque Pharos is expected to proceed to the Stream to-day'preparatory'to setting sail for Loudon with her wool cargo. The barque Orellana, which arrived from Adelaide yesterday, will take her' berth, and is to! load, wool for ■ London, under tho auspices of tho Scales Line of sailing vessels. Tho Orellana left Adelaide on April 25, and experienced a fair passage across the Tasman Sea. Captain W. Young, who was in command of j the vessel when she visited Wellington about j two years ago,'still retains command. ARRIVAL OF THE ULIMAROA. / The Huddart-Parker Company's-steamer Ulimaroa, from Sydney direct, arrived in port about noon yesterday. The vessel experienced exceptionally fine' weather on the trip across the Tasman Sea, and en routo the voyage was enlivened by a concert on one evening and a ball on another. Included, in the imports brought by .the Ulimaroa are tho following items:—losl cases fruit, 2000 bags sugar,'2o9 bars lead, 256 sleepers, 18 poles, 1 horse, 200 bags merchandise, 689- bags rice, 242 packages tea, 78 ingots copper, 230 bundles tube, 84 sleepers, 91 ingots tin, 269 pieces timber!-335 bags flour, 1210 bags salt, 53 cases machines, 28 ingots spelter, 103 cases spirits, 20 cases beer, 42 cases dates, 50 casks, resin, 168 cases preserves, 1511 bales kanok, 1 motor-car. and large quantity sundries. The steamer is fixed to sail for Melbourne via Southern ports this afternoon. Tho Union Company advise that the Rakanoa was expected to leave Westport for Auckland last night. Tho Manapouri, now on her way from Fiji, via Auckland, to Wellington, will proceed from here' to Lyttelton and Dunedin. The Wanganui trader 'Stormbird, on arrival from Wanganui to-day, will be placed on tho Patent Slip for cleaning purposes. Tho Waitara trader Tainui is expected to make one . of her periodical trips to Wellington next week, being due hero on Tuesday. Messrs. Johnston and Co., Ltd., are advised that the steamer Indravelli, from 'Vancouver, has arrived at Suva, and sailed yesterday for Auckland. The Union Company's steamer Kaiapoi is expected to leave Westport to-day, for Tnnaru, and tho Komata is timed to leavo there tomorrow for Wellington. The preliminary inquiry into the Takapuna's accident, which was to have been held yesterday, was postponed through the captain of the vessel being- abseut from Wellington. No .definite date has been fixed for-tho inquiry.

The liner Paparoa leaves Wellington to-day . for Lyttelton, where the balance of her cargo will be discharged'preparatory to her going on the loading berth for London. The Kahu,. .which is due from* - Napier, via East Coast; to-day, is to leave port, on a special trip to Orongo Oronpo. The vessel is expected back again on Friday. It is expected that the Union Company's Fteamer Kaitangata will be ready to Jeave Bunbury on Saturday, with a cargo of jarrah for discharge at Timaru and Dunedin. The New Zealand . Shipping Company's ~ steamer Turakina, which was fixed to leave Wellington to-day, for Waitara and . other ports,. lias had her departure postponed'till to-morrow. The F.-11.-S. liner Morayshire, from Liverpool, via Auckland, is expected here this evening. The Devon Wellington on. Sunday, morning, for Picton, in connection with her Homoward loading operations. A telegram from Westport was received' by the Marine Department yesterday, stating that . tho Kittawa had passed a green-painted deckhouse, which had apparently belonged to a small vessel. The deckhouse was sighted near Farewell. Spit, and probably the vessel to which it belonged is one of the small sailing craft, and has not yet reached port to report the loss. The first steamer to. exceed 10,000 tons was the City of Paris, in 1888; the first to exceed 20,000 tons the Celtic, in. 1901; and "the first to exceed -. 30,000 tons, the Lu6itania. In 1810. the average speed of Atlantic, steam shipping was '8 knots an hour; 1850, 12 knots; 1360,'12V'knots; 1870, 111 knots; 1830, 151 knots; 1880, 20 knpts;.l9oo, i '23J knot?; and 1907, 25 knots. During the past v > 67 years, the i.Lp: has increased from 710 to -•••' 68,000. ( The New Zealand Gazette of May 7 has a "Notice to Mariners" which states that the Bluff Harbour Board has given notice that two 'loading beacons have been established, one on' the point near the Tewaewae Rocks, and one further up-the beach'to the north-eastward, showing bright white lights, along the fairway of the south channel.' The beacons when, in. line bear N. sdeg. E. The lights are Wigham lights, and should be visible in clear, weather " at a distance of about; sis'miles. . Two more ' beacons, also with 'W'igham lights, but with red, rays, which should: bo visible four mile's, hava - ' been placed on the harbour side of tho entrance for the next bend in the channel, the frontlight 'being on Te Waewae Point, and the rear one about 200 yards to north-westward'of it. ; V These beacons in lino bear ; N.\ 32deg.
