COMPETITION IN THE HOP INDUSTRY. PROTECTIVE DUTY. NOT TO BE ENTERTAINED BY THE GOVERNMENT. BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPYRIQHI (Rec. May 12, 9.55 p.m.) London, May 12. Tho House of Lords adopted a motion by Lord Addington to tho effect that the critical condition of the Kentish hop industry deserves the. Government's immediate attention. Tho Archbishop of Canterbury expressed himself as aghast at the oondition of tho Kentish villages. Tho Earl of Carrington, President of tho Board of Agriculture, admitted that the situation was very serious. Tlio Government, ho said, deeply sympathised with tho growers, but was unablo to entertain the proposal for a duty on foreign hops. Lord Harris (whoso seat is in Kent, and who owns about 4700 acres) insisted that the hop industry must ; be ruined unless the Government intervened. ' Lord Lansdowne, on behalf of tho Unionists, agreed that it was desirable to await the report of the Hop Committee which tho Government had sot up, but insisted that foreign competition was tho main cause of the trouble. .
