ENGINEERS AND SHIPOWNERS.

QUESTIONS IN DISPUTE. A conference between' the Wellington branch of . the New Zealand . Shipowners' Federation and the Wellington branch of the Australasian Institute of Marino Engineers was held yesterday morning in roferonce to salaries, etc. . ' Tho Institute asked lor increased wages for engineers on locally-owned steamers and for alterations 'in their conditions of employment. They asked for a rise of £1 per month, from £20: to £21 for'chiof onguieers, £16 for sccond, and £14 for third engineers There was no difference of opinion as to the claims of the two latter,, but the principal difference was about the chief engineers. ■ Increased victualling allowances and specified holidays on full pay were also asked. As to tho latter request, it was held that it meant putting another ongineer on tho ship in most cases. While a ship is in port, tho owners do not always provide board ana lodging, and, if this is not' done, an allowance of 6s. per day is mado to clnof engineers and oa. and 4s. respectively to sccona ond third engineers. Tho Institute asked ffar ten days' holiday on full pay each year, or to bunch it for two or threo years as might be mutually arranged. No decision was arrivod at, bttt there is overy indication that a satisfactory settferaont will bo reachcdi There will b« a further conference at a later dato. •
