TASMANIAN-NEW ZEALAND' HARDWOOD ■ TRADE. . .AN AUSTRALIAN-./VlEW."''.'''''--' Now that, the Union;' S.S. Company has taken such-a determined stand'and refused to dispatch a vessel to Tasmania- to lift 1 hardwood for l-,ew Zealand ports'unless there'is a lull load (which amounts' to about -80,000 1 feet), . tne exporters should'(says 'the. Sydney. .-"Shipping, List of May 5) encourage any attempt of other companies .to, enter , the- trade-.between iasmama and the Dominion by- giving them all support. When. the. Union. Copipany did . ; not possess sucli a strong hold' of 'tlio trade between the two places they were very' ener- -, gotic in their efforts to obtain' froight, and sought the whole support of the timber' ship- : ' pcrs, but now they practically tell their- former supporters that thoy' can do -without assistance from them; Of course it is quite) within tile right of tho companies now carrying/ on < tho servico betweon New Zealand and Tasmania to refuse cargo, .but it is a very unfair, position they have taken up. On behalf 'o'f the Union Company it is stated that the .-regular steamers calling at Tasmania' -!,weekly; are wholly' unsuited to' carry timber, and that unless a wiiole shipment is rcadv on the'wharf ' they .are not prepared to send a vesseiKfor )>!, ?L p F es ? Il(: ;; ' s estimated that-no less'than iO.OOO feet of hardwood is lying on the w'Karf X ready to be dispatched, and the Harbour Master has refused to allow .'to.ebo brought there unless the Steamship Comriany will guarantee to take it. .The - Harbour! - Alastor is quite right in his.action,;.for if any," ' more. timber was allowed ■ there" it would seriously intorfero with the space available for other cargo, but as the companies will not condescend to. take it,'the timber industry, which has now- assumed considerable'- proportions, will bo blocked. The', position -is intolerable, and.'the sooner some othir. : company, which will not act in such a high-handed' manner, enters tho trade, the better for all concerned. . • , .

: AUSTRALIAN WOOL STEAMERS. Although none of the steamers which' were '• '" placed; on the wool, berth in ; ' Australian ports s during the season now drawing'to a close broke ' any records for smart steaming between the • ' Commonwealth and, their first port of dis- ■ charge, some of them placed very- satisfactory , - performances ..to .their credit, while others did ' not arrive at their respective destinations until somo days after schedule date. An Aus- ; ." tralian paper has secured a correct list of the number of days taken'by some-of the fleet to' accomplish tho .passago, between the final loading port and the first port in the United Kingdom.or Continent, and it shows at'a glance" 1 what, remarkably fast steamers were placed at • the disposal of wool shippers in Australia.durin" the busiest part of the 1907-8 season. Tho following are. taken from the list as being of interest to New, Zealanders—Under the auspices i of tho Australian Union Line the voyage from Adelaide to: Dunkirk was made by the Marero in 39 days, Miniiro 42 days, Wakanui; 44 days, ' Indraghiri 50. days. The Hawke's Bay took \55 days to cover the distance from Melbourne to 1 Hull (via. the Cape).*'Ouly.:one steamer flying the' A.U. tho Star of .Scotland, and she Dunkirk: in - 44 days. ,The F.H.S. Lirie.of steamers .in'nearly all cases .made Adelaide the" last; port of', call ' for cargo 'and London the'first', port,/of. dis-. charge. The Dorset-has/the' smartest steaming *; performance to her credit; for she made the trip in 39 days. v The Suffolk'did the run in 43 days, and the, Essex and Surrey took, aday longer. Forty-fivb days elapsed between!.the departure and. arrival of the Sussex, .while' tho. Durham and Ayrshire -.took". 48' days each' to • •:>'* cover the distance. The Buteshire was' 54 'days ' : ( on the same passago. The-Banffshire made a , call_ at. Albany, for cargo before leaving Australia, i and then made the trip to London ir , ■ 48 days! The nine, steamers mentioned pro-' ceeded by..the Suez'route.
