ADVANCES TO WORKERS.

Sir,—ln my remarks on tho abovo.'tho other day I to&k exooption to the timo it takes to i£et somo of tho loans through, which means a loss in discounts to the borrower; but in justico to the superintendent and his staff, 1 would like to say that 1 am satisfied that there, is no unduo dola.v at tho olfioe. I have always found everything promptly attended to, and the sciilo of olinrgns arc remarkably low. Tho complaints I have heard, and 1 have, heard of several, are all in Hastings, and.when'] find that, tho valuer is stationed at Napier, it' is quito clear

that Jin cannot run into Hastings any and every day of tho week. Hastings is now liy no means a small town, and tile headquarters oi everything is in Napier. If one wants a few pounds out of the p;st office a day's notice is necessary. In many ways business matters arc delayed by having to play second fiddle to Napier. A local solicitor told mo that he has had his head half worried off him by tlioso who had applied for loans under tlio Loans to Workers Act, -and wanted their money to save their discounts. One of tlio best features of tlio'Act is the clauso providing for progress payments, thus enabling tlio poorest man who has secured bis section to get bis home, but such a provision almost contains tlio words of prompt action. In conclusion, I wish to add that there seems to be quite a number who have not fully grasped the liberal terms of this measure, and as it is becoming to' bo more fully understood moro and moro are availing themselves of. the opportunity placed within their reach. Many of us who are not eligible to get money from this particular department, have had loans from 0110 or more of the othe.r Government money-lending offices, and wo should rejoice to seo tlio system extended to tlio toiling wage-earners. —I am, etc., E. STEVENSON. Hastings, Mar 11.
