' ' Auckland, May - 11. .The new Government regulations undef which.tho Rotorua fisheries aro. taken out of the hands of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society,, and placed - under State'. control,formed the subject .of a deputation to tho* Minister for Justice, (the Hon. J. M'Gowan) to-day;,.. j , •Mr. Patton. said that since tho Rotorua streams had, been taken under State control the Auckland Acclimatisation Society' had: been plaoed in a very serious position. Five hundred thousand trout ova wero needed to replenish the streams, and- tho only chance tho Society had was to be. allowed to tako .tho ova from.Rotorua. ' Mr. Cheeseman pointed out that Rotorua had been stocked by tlio Auckland Acchmartisation Society some years ago. Tho Society: kept brood fish, but when trout 'became plentiful at Rotorua the brood fish were' released'because the ova from /wild fish was niucli stronger, and likely to give'far .better results. For throe -years past the. Society ■had been restocking streams' witTi the ova taken .from Rotorua. Complaints have recently-been: instituted ' in 'Wellington with regard to what is termed the " glut" in the labour: market 'there, due , to .the supplies through immigration' and • other channels proving too- great' for- the do-. mand. On application to Mr. J. Sbanagh'an, officer. in charge of -the local labour bureau, it- was learned that .such a condition or . affairs can in no way lis said to exist in Auckland. A man named James Ward was found ing on the river bank on Saturday night suf- . fering from an overdose of cblorodyne. He was taken to the Police Station by a con-, stable with the idea that ho was-drunk, but later he was removed to the Hospital, where ; the attendants had to keep him. moving all night lest ho should fall asleep. Yesterday he was better. James Ward was this morn-■ ing : charged at the Magistrate's Court 'with . ■ having attempted.tq,commit suicide, and on': the application of the police he was remanded; to May 16.-- ' v . , ' . A Chinese/ coal trimmer on board the African Monarch; which arrived frorn Sydney to-day, committed suicide on. the passage by hanging , himself in one of the coal bunkers. ■' Ashburton, • May.. 11.
