PAHIATUA ELECTORATE.
(BY TELEGBAPH.' —SPECIAL COMIESFONDEN'T). . ; Masterton, May 11. .' There js a deadlock amongst tho supporters of the Opposition,party in the Pahiatua electorate,. oyer tho 'claims • of Messrs. , J. C. Cooper, and W. Hawkins, and Major Bolton, all of whom have announced their intention to contest tho seat at the forthcoming'general election:.. Some timo ago a .meeting was held'in' Pahiatua whicch decided in favour of'-Mr. Ccoper as the selected candidate. This has now been followed by another meeting held at Woodville, where amongst other things under consideration was an allegation that Mr. Hawkins had pledged him-s;lf-to Major Bolton not to contest tho Pahiatua seat. A letter was read from Mr. Hawkins giving this' statement an emphatic denial, declaring .his' iiitention to con•test' the seat against all 1 comers, and refusing, absolutely; to place his name, in-the hat bofore any conference. , • After a considerable amount of discussion, the meeting resolved; that it could not see its'" way to support either Major Bolton or Mr. Cooper, and that it pledged itself- to support Sir. Hawkins.
