BURGLARS AT WORK

ROBBERY FROM AN AUCKLAND CONVENT. A PRESSMAN'S " NARROW ESCAPE." (BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland, May 8. . Still another burglary has to be recorded, this time at St. Joseph's Convent, Grey Lynn. It transpires that on Sunday night the boarders at, the Convent' attended church, and returned about 9 o'clock: While they were having supper several of them heard a noise in the basement, but did not attach any importance to it. All retired at the usual hour. Nothing further of a suspicious character occurred during the night, and when the Sisters resumed their duties on the following morning they did not notice anything unusual. At about 11 o'clock, however, one of the Sistera had occasion to go to the cash-box, and then, for the first time, discovered that it was missing. A search was instituted, but .the cash-box. could not bs found anywhere in the building. Subsequently, it was found in the garden. The lock had been forced open and the contents, .amounting to £0, abstracted. A. search of the building also revealed the fact that the drawers in various rooms on the basement had been interfered with. It is considered that an entrance was gained by means of one of the windows. A pressman, who was sent to the Convent last night to obtain the particulars given, had rather an adventure. On arrival outside the building ho was, accosted and closely questioned by a policeman, • who was evidently. on duty protecting the Nuns. The. officer demanded the scribe's name, and wanted to know his business. His.manner caused the journalist to decline, to satisfy him, and ho. proceeded to the Convent, the constable going with him to the door.. The usual method of arousing the inmates was adopted, whereupon a female voice from within asked: "Who's there?" "The police,".said the officer of the law. "Well, if it isn't the police, mind, I'll shoot," said the-voice of the guardian Nun. She then opened tho door, and explanations followed. The pressman got his information, but considers ho had a narrow escape'.
