TYNESIDE MINE FLOODED.

The heavy rain experienced on tho Coast during the last few-days has caused tho flooding; of- the- Tyneside mine. On Friday night, the 'mine' managor and miners made every-eSort to keep back the water, but it steadily 'increased; until it reached the pumps, and at eleven o'clock; on Saturday morning the. mine was abandoned. The loss to the district is considerable, as the weekly coal, output was2ooo tons, and 150 men are thrown out .of employment. ' It is held by experts- that the mine is a total loss. Three shifts'will be .put'oil on Monday at tho Old Brunner mine to provido coal for -local consumption. . ;■ ' '' (BY TEDEOnAPn.—SPECIAI. CORRESPONDENT.) : Croymouth, May 10. A fissure opened at tho back of the hillside of the Tynesido {nine at Brunnerlt was caused through tho very heavy rains which fell. during last week, and a constant flow of water-lias been running, into tho mine over since Tuesday. '.Mr. R. Alison and his staff havo been at work practically ever since trying to keep the water down, 'but- their efforts were'; ineffectual, as tho water continued' to gain, and by Saturday morning it was found that it would bo impossible to..save the mino, which was accordingly abandoned. This is a serious outlook to the Bruiiner district, as it muot moan tho, total abandonment of the mine. It is' recognised that tho Tynesido is one of the best kinds of coal for giis-making, for which' it is in great demand all over tho Dominion. . At tho present time tho Greymouth Gas Works havo only about two days' supply on hand, and will havo to look olsewhere for their supplies. Evory effort is being made by tho management to sav« everything thoy possibly can.
