It is surmised that tho valuables thus washed out of the •shore had been hidden in a cave by buccaneers of tho Spanish main. Tile news of the treasure sotm spread, and people hurried thither from all parts, bringing picks, and shovels with which to aid their,search. It is not the first occasion on which the I,'ortugueso coast has given up to the light of day., tho spoils-of pirates taken from passongor ships and Spanish galleonn.
