Mr. Ernest Avos, tho well-known writer on economical subjects, who lately visited tho colonies, giving evidence before tho Hotiso of Commons Homo Work Committee, said that though wages boards. worked well in Australia in fixing legal minimum wages, British trades presented formidable difficulties in tho way of such a course. In the event of a large increase of Australian immigration, said Mr. Aves, it would probably be impossible to maintain tho present rate of wages. Speaking generally,- lie considered tho success of the boards' deterr minations was contingent, upon protection. The tendency of tho determinations was to weaken trade unions. CHARGE OF SWEATING. SYDNEY CLERKS. • ! Sydney, May. 7, A member of the Clerks' Union states that 90 per cent, of tho warehouses in Sydney sweat their clerks and evade tho early closing laws.
