ANARCHY IN AMERICA.
A RECRUDESCENCE. The murder of the King and Crown Princo of Portugal seems to have had its effect in ( a recrudescence of .auar.chy in the United c States (says - the Neiv York correspondent i of the ■ "Sydney Telegraph" writing under * date April B).i A few weeks ago a Roman £ Catholic priest in Denver was shot and (. killed byian Italian anarchist, who had just [ received the consecrated wafer from him, and t within the last week the Chief of Police of a Chicago, who has been acting in curbing thd i activities of the "reds" in that city, was as- t saulted in his home by a Russian Jewish t anarchist, whom lie shot dead after the man f had wounded tVie chief, his son, and his coachman. These outrages have stirred ,tho s public to a crusade'against undesirable for- 1' eigners, especially those of criminal antcce- r dents, and there is serious' talk in official i circles of immigration' legislation of a drastic character. , t The Department of Commerce and Labour t has begun an investigation into the number c of aliens in the prisons, reformatories, insane •• asylums, and' charitable institutions of the country. The present immigration law. ex- c eludes from tho country (or would, if it I; were rigidly enforced) "persons who have ? been convicted of, or admit having commit- G ted, a felony or other crime or misdemeanour - involving moral turpitude," and if any suoh 1) persons are found in the United States with- ii in three, years after the time of their arrival G they may be deported. Tho present law per- I mits the exclusion of "anarchists, or per- I sons who believe in or advocate the overthrow I by forco or violence of tho Government l of n the United States, or of all Governments, • I : or of all forms of law, or the assassination 1' of public officials." It is, in fact, mandatory I upon the Secretary of Commerce and Labour I to deport any alien anarchist whp may io J: found to have been in tho country loss than G threo years. What is now contemplated is d a.law giving him power to deport.such, un- C desirables, irrespective of tho length of timo t they have been in tho country, and a New York Congressman has introduced n liii] call-' ing for tho expulsion of any alien after tho ( completion of a term in prison. It is also h suggested that all persons of adult ago who ip cannot read and write shall be denied admission. Thore is talk .of an attempt to offocfc _an international agreement that when a a citizen of ono country sooks admission to I another he shall produco a certificate, of- J ficially attested, giving his home record. In most of the largo cities tho local, police forces v maintain detachments of detectives trained I to hunt down foreign criminals. . ■
