' . , Christchurch, May 7. - - At tho meeting of the Canterbury Philo- ' Bophical Institute last night the Chairman : said that. last year saw the carrying out i by tho Institute of the expedition to : the -i ' Southern Islands, and during the present year the Society would have a great deal of work to carry through. There would be the issuing of the report of that expedition, a tvork to' be edited by Dr. Chilton, and tho Institute was in addition undertaking tho consideration of: various scicntific problems of great interest which arose in>conliectiori'with the boring of the Arthur's Pass tunnel. In '.carrying out that wo'rk the : • strain on the income' of • the Institute might 'be somewhat severe, but-it was work that, ■■' . must be done. Another work that had been . very seriously tak'en-in hand/was the forma- ' tion of a library. as, complete as possible of all 'the. scientific literature relating-to An- ■ ■ 'tarctica. That, of course, ,would involve, a - large expenditure of-money, 1 spread over a number of years','howover, but _it was a matter 'which affected thA 'reputation'of the In- ' - etitute, and. therefore the members'of tho council trusted, that all'members of the In- '.' Etitute would do their best'' to co : operato with the council in'increasing the income by introducing new members or by making contributions to the library fund, or presenting ..books direct. , . -
