ANOTHER NEW ZEALAND INVENTOR.
. lßi:zEiNßira.VowA:qoßiasr6ia>BNi.] '■■■ Auckland, May 4. . The invention of the double-acting highcompression motor by Mr. W. Johansen, a young local resident ,in Auckland, seems, to be exciting much*''interest' in engineering circles at the present time. Engineers from all parts of Now':' Zealand, attended the .demonstration given by Mr.' Johansen a Jew. days, ago, and a - great-* deal of enthusiasm was "displayed in the expressions of approval by experts. During an interview with the young inventor after tho public demonstration, ho informed mo, that the-, result was achieved by exploding the i cylinder alternately top and bottom, thus getting power every second;, instead of every fourth revolution. : . ■ ' ' • You are quite sanguine about its success? Mr. Johansen was asked. ' ~ There can be no doubt of the high value' of 1 , the invention. The designs have been submitted to experts in Australia and -England; who are unanimous in pronouncing it the most important invention in oil engines , : of recent years, and a-, large ,'engineering firm in ' England is .in treaty with rn'o for • tho right to manufacture it." ■ • Is'the invention applicable to all power? "Yes'jit can be applied to marine, stationary; ' and motor engines. It is also 100 per cent, (hundred) cheaper - than present motors,' chiefly on account of its enormous compression and an explosion taking place - at both; ends, thus doubling the power. Tho ' 'cost'of construction would not be increased, but doublo pdwer ~ tvould bo given for the same money." ■ ■ In a '.very short time a syndicate was formed to exploit t the invention, and the 'patentee is shortly leaving for Europe and America. Mr. Johansen, who is quito a - young' man, is . tho', eldest' son..of'. Mr.,'N. ! Jolianscn,: of Devonport. He served his time with Messrs. M'Coskrie, engineers,. of Auckland, and was until 1 recently in the / employ of tho Union Steam Ship, Company as, engineer. . , v : .', ,
