The Palmerston Orchestral Society will commenco its season on June 2. The College Street School intends to hold a bazaar on May 20. Tho Health Inspector reports a case of typhoid at Colyton, and scarlet fever at Otaki. EEILDING. KIMBOLTON FARMERS' UNION. The annual meeting of tho Kimbolton branch' of tho Farmers' Union was held yes- < torday. Mr. E. H. Crabb occupied tho chair, and over 25 members wero present. The balance-sheet showed an amount of £18-16s. collected in members' subscriptions,, and . a -. credit balance ;of £3 10s. ' ' - Tho election of officers for tho ensuing term resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr. E. H. Crabb; vice-chairman, Mr. C. Dick; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Jas. Rcntoul; committeo, Messrs. Morton, Bartlett,. Jas. Watt, Hodge, Fowler, Cornish, Parsons, 6.'Smith,; Nesdale, Shaplcski, Warner, and Brown. Tho election of a delegate to tho Provin-. cial Conference, to be held in Feilding on May 26, was keenly, contested, and on a ballot being taken Mr. 'Morton was chosen. The following remits were ordered to be sent on to the Provincial Conference: — "That as the provisions of the Land Act of 1907 give a against the reaggregation of land Ijsld under the lease in perpetuity tenure, the Government bo urged to give such :,landholders provisions for obtaining the '• freehold on some more equitable terms than are at present provided for." "That as the town Labour leaders have tjhown themselves determined to bring all agricultural workers witliin tho scope of the Arbitration : Act, and,'.'as in that case it is necessary that thg'most' expert advice should ho availablo for members when dealing with the resulting 1 awards, tho Colonial Conference be respectfully urged to favourably consider the question of affiliating with the Employers' Federation. ' A petition is being prepared for signature by residents on the western side of tho Feilding Borough, asking that that portion of tho llanawatu County be taken into tho Borough. The Mayor (Mr. Trewin) was reinstalled in the Council Chambers yesterday. At a meeting at Kimbolton,, of the commiteo appointed to arrange for the social to bo tendered to tho Minister for Railways, on bis approaching visit to Kimbolton and Apiti, 1 it was agreed to ask the ladies to undertake bho catering, and also tho arranging of tho hall, etc. Mr. Crabb reported that he had arranged for motor cars for the party, and his action was approved. After some discussion, it was arranged provisionally that tho route to be followed should be to Apiti and 1 Tablo Flat, returning tho samo' evening to Kimbolton for the dinner and social, and next morning to motor through to Mangarimu and Rangiwahia, returning to Feilding, via Waituna West. . ' ' ' • ! • • v BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING."' ■ The usual fortnightly meoting of the Levin Borough Council was held at .the Council Chambers oil Monday night. There wcro present the Mayor. (Mr. B. R. Gardener), and Councillors* Mackenzie, Hall, Williams, Levy, Douglas, Ryder, Hankins, and Hudson. . BeFore commencing ' the ordinary business i the Council sat as the Domain Board, when a letter was received from the Horowhenua Rugby Union asking for tho use of the Domain for football for tho season, and ako asking if the Union could erect a few seats for the convenience .of lady'spectators/After.sortsiderable discussion on th& advisability',-, ofmaking the -fees"'for" using ' tho. ground : as small as possible, it: was decided' to grant permission to tho Union to use the Domain ror the season on payment of ten guineas. ' Tho report of" the Streets Committee was then read, which proposed- inter alia, that tho Council should call, for tenders for' asphalting the footpaths between the township and tho railway station. Considerable [liscussion took place upon this matter. Councillor Mackenzie' thought -it advisable not to spend montoy for tar to do asphalting when Levin would have its own gas works in about twelve months time. ' Other councillors objected to this as it would then ho next winter before anything was, done to tho streets. The report was adopted. It was eventually decided to call tenders- for the forming and asphalting of the path on the easterly sido of. tho road between tho Pest Office and the Railway Station. The Council then adjourned for a special meeting to strike a special rate to provide interest, etc., for the "water works loan, when it', was resolved to strike a special. rate of two'elevenths of a penny in the ■£ to provide for the'£4ooo loan, and a special rate of one penny and seven-twentieths of a -penny to provido for the £18,000 loan. Tho Council then went into committee, to discuss an important matter of private .viand.' Accounts amounting to £221 Bs. '4d. were passed for payment. . A. special meeting of the Borough Council was held yesterday at noon for the purpose of installing the Mayor (Mr. B. R. The 'following resolution was also carried That this annual meeting of the Parochial District of Eketaliuna recognises the need of the insurance of tho licensed clergy of tho diocese against accident while engaged in tho prosecution of their work, arid expresses the hope that the consideration which this question is now ro'coiving at the hands of the Standing Committee will lead to the adoption of some practicable scheme which will he acceptable to the Diocesan Synod, and alford to the clorgy that' protection which, in the opinion of this meeting, should be provided."
