WELLINGTON POST OFFICE
ELABORATE PLANS. , The plans of the- new Wellington Post Office are now completed, and are being copied. The specifications, which are .much moro extensive than is usual -for a building in New Zealand, are also nearly finished. Tho Government architect (Mr. J. Campbell) hopes that by the ; time the site is cleared of the, old buildings, which are now in process of removal, the' Public Works Department will be ready, to invite tenders for construction of itho now Post Office. There has never beon a building erected in New Zealand, • Mr. Campbell states, for .fhich so many drawings- were required in connection with tho plans. Tho drawings for the Post Office cover no less than 21 sheets of extraordinary large size. Eight sheets are taken up with drawings of the steol work requirements. Tho unusually large number of drawings needed is explained by soveral causes. Tho present building must bo reconstructed almost completely, internally, to suit tho scheme of tho additions. Tho back wall will also have to be re-built, to make it a divisional, instead of an external, wall. The largo amount of steel work to be used in construction, and the somowhat intricate requirements of the Postal Department on six floors, arc other factors that entail heavy architectural work.
