6 Sir, —I do not desire to raise any con- ® trovorsy by entering into tlio merits or demerits of No-License, but I sco in your coli. umns the Now Zealand Toinpcranco Alliance recently congratulated themselves on the rcmarkable progross of prohibition in America. 0 They might have equally well passed a fur- ° tlicr resolution, that they wore greatly surprised to observe that, coincident with, the t~ progress of prohibition, there lmd been also a a remarkablo inereaso in the Customs duties 0 paid on liquor in America, in other words, in tlio consumption of liquor; and a still fur- ' ther resolution, that they wore horribly shocked to see that in the State of Kansas, where no saloon license lias been issued for ® twenty-six years, there were, on June 30, 1906, no less than 1205 persons committed = in part for crimes from murder to robbery, including 349 for murder and manslaughter. The same thing, applies in New Zealand. No-Licenso is a crowning success in Inver- [ cargill—so say -the No-License advocates; but . in 1907, under No-Licenso, the duty paid on liquor there was greater by £163 Bs. than that paid in 1905 under a public police super- ' vised system.
