[by telegraph.—press association.] _— STRANDING OF THE TAVIUNI. THE NAUTICAL INQUIRY. Wcstport, May 5. At the nautical inquiry into, tho stranding of ,the s.s Taviuni, evidence given by Captain Powell (master of the dredge hopper), Mr. Matthews (master of the dredge Ruby Seddon); Mr. Furneaux (harbour .master), and Mr. R. A. Young (Board's engineer), showed that no complaints had been made about insufficiency of the lights at tho rivor entrarice. Tho harbour master had traded to Wcstport for thirty years, and in his opinion the port "was sufficiently lighted; The engineer stated that for eight years-there had . been no change in tho sounding of the inner and outer contour lines outside the entrance ; to the river.' Francis Fletcher, master • of the Karamea trader s.s. Ngunguru, described tho conditions on the night of the stranding as'squally at sea with a haze along the water ' at the uphead, and fairly thick.. He came ~ along, to. port just after.the Taviuni, being. • seven miles away . when he observed rockets - of distress. He sent over to the . Taviuii; using the lead until he got into three fa-i thoms. He would not'have used the lead if. he had not seen the Taviuni. It was an exceptional night. Between, tho' squalls the lights could be scon a considerable distance off;. He did ; not think a stranger would have-come-in close to tho coast on ,such a night, . but, ono knowing tho port would have more, confidence. He agreed with the suggestion as to a-red sector at Cape Foulwind light. Frederick Radford, second officer of the Tar-, iuni, took bearings on tho red light after , the shin struck: ; It showed on the port quarter. ', When lie saw the; light it would , not bo in the direction the .look-but ; man looks. Mr. Sawyer, master of the's.s. Moa,' went out on the night the Taviuni stranded. , He said-the haze on the shore- looked as if j caused' by Smoko ;from-' the briquette ■ works I obscuring the lights at times. The inquiry ; will resunio to-mdrrow. .THE. BUTTER TRADE. , ' T •. ' . . Auckland, May 5. ' To-day there were 18,125 boxes of butter ' in-;'..cold ' storage.-'.
