THE "SHOUTING" SYSTEM.

Sir, —Somo of tho evil effects of this system haying been brought rather prominently, before,mo of late, I wish, through, the medium of your widely-read columns, to' onco moro draw attention to thorn. Why, Mr. Editor, should it be considered tho correct and proper thing on, any and every occasion to ask a'man to "Come alone and have a drink." .Why not a cup of tea or a dinner? cither of which would have a far loss'injurious effect upon tho persons so invited.' Especially is this the case with tho young men of our Dominion; and it is on their behalf, and for tho sake of those near to them, arid'for. tho future of our fair land, that I write. It is not only tho shouting at the public bars that I refer to. Somo people, ovon in these enlightened days, seem to consider' it- necessary'-whenever a young man. enters-their doors, on whatever pretext, to ply him with liquor, whether he wants it or not.. They know his father (who probably nevor drank in his life) or his grandfather, or there are a hundred and ono reasons why he .must take it. In fact, they let it be pretty plainly seen that they will bo offended if he doesn't; though why it. should bo considorod moro of un insult to refuse a drink than a cup of tea the writer

, fails to' seo. Do those otherwise kind hearted and well-meaning, peoplo ever con sidor the temptation tliey nre placing before theso young men, or are they simply indif ferent to the results so long as their replitn ] tion for hospitality (so-called) and for bein| jolly good fellows" is known abroad? Hop ing this may come under the notice of sonv ,r who are addicted to this practice, which i ) ruining so many of our brightest and best- , I am, etc., i ONE WHO FEELS STRONGLY. > April 2S.
