Preparations are proceeding on an elaborate scale at Otira for the Otira tunnel opening function on Tuesday, and tho. gathering promises to, bd the largest, ever held on tho Coast. ' Tlio day has been declared a public holiday, and the schools throughout tho_ district will bo closed.- The rbihvay authorities are making every arrangement for successfully dealing with tho enormous passenger traffic that will be offered. Given fine weather, the function should ,be a zreat success. Christchurch, May 1. The Otira correspondent of the "Press" writes: —Once driving operations had been commenced in earnest daylight was soon left behind, and with threo shifts working, the progress in the heading has been good.. The ground was stony and extremely rough, but a day or two ago came the gratifying news that the solid country had been struck. Men who are well qualified to speak claim that it wjll never be tho hardness of tho rock met with that will retard progress, but broken ground. "
