AN EMPIRE CONGRESS

CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE. TO MEET IN SYDNEY NEXT YEAR. NUMEROUS DELEGATES. fly TELEGRAPH —PEESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT (Reo. May 3, 4.40 p.m.) V ' London, May 2. It has boon decided that tho triennial Congress of Chambers of Commerco of the Empire shall meet in Sydney either on September 14 or September 21, 1909. Tho delegates will spend t-wolvo days in New South Wales .(including the days tho Congress is sitting); and six days each in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, and West Australia, and fivo days in Tasmania. Between one i hundred and two hundred commercial men of Britain, will participate, besides many from Canada, South Africa, and olsowhere. It is announced that the invitation to visit Now Zealand is most likely to bo accepted. A VALUABLE ADVERTISEMENT. . Noxt year a unique opportunity will present itself for'.advertising the Commonwealth's resources among an influential section, writes tho "Sydney Morning Iloruld." In September of 1909 the triennial congress of tho Chambers of Commerco of thoEmpiro will-Ira hold in Sydnoy, and it is expected that a large number of delegates will bo presont from !ho United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa! and other parts. _ Already tho Australian Chambers are considering liow best to entertain the visitors during their sojourn in tho Commonwealth. Mr. William l Knox lins already visited Sydney with a view of ascertaining what steps are to bo taken, and tho question of ways and means has already been gone into. It is to be hoped that inter-Stato : jealousies will be rigidly kept in. the background, and whateveris done will be with a manifest desire, to consider rather tho welfare of the visitors than to do something better than is being done in tho other States. It is understood that tho Federal Government has promised ,£IOOO towards the entertainment, and that the Sydney and Melbourne Chambers will each contribute ..£SOO, with smaller contributions from the Chambers of the other capitals. Tho time at the disposal of tho delegates will not be long, and it will be divided up between the different States so that they, may get, as broad an idea as possible of the potentialities of tho whole, of the continent. In order to make the most of their visit an amicablo understanding should bo arrived at between the entertainment committees of the various Chambers in order to prevent overlapping. As the Congress itself will 6e held in Sydney, and will occupy at least three 'full' days, the time at the disposal of delegates in this Stato will bo moro limited than will be the caso elsewhere. It is, therefore, all tho more necossary that tho best use should bo made of tho time. Ono can scarcely exaggerate the , importance of tho gathering, and doubtless many influential delegates will take part.-
