Owing to severe depression of trado in Germany, unemployment is general in almost all industries.' • FREETRADERS DRAW A MORAL. Under date January 15, the "Spectator" refers to the increasing number of unemployed in Germany, and adds:—"On Tuesday no less than nine meetings of unemployed, were held in various working-class quarters. .Resolutions were adopted declaring that the consequences of the industrial crisis which has already bs- - had only,been mitigated for tho-working classes by tho influenfp, of the Trado.,Unions in preventing wages from'sinking'.to'a'vcry low: level. The State was'called'iipori to carry out immediately all the buik]ing, and other enter-' prises which it: to 'maintain " le Trade Union rate of-"wages," and : to 'remit all duties upon the necessaries of life. .The municipalities wero requested to proceed,with special works to meet, the Smergoncy, and to remi' local taxation in the/case, of the unemployed. ... A wave of slackness in trade is apparently approaching; but one,of the first countries to suffer acutely is a. high-. l 'Protectionist ' State whose i rigid tariff lias prevented trado from adapting itself e'asily to meet and mitigate the difficulties. Already in Berlin desperate uneconomic remedies are being, proposed, such as Tariff Reformers tell us are never calljd for in Protectionist countries," <
