The turbine steamer Maheno, for instance, burns about 420 tons on the average between Sydney and Wellington, while maintaining a speed of 15 knots, and tho twin screw steanier Marama consumes 350 tons; the Moerakiand Manuka average, on the same timetable, about- 280 tons. ; ' TALUNE,.J/ROM'FIJI. The vessel brought transhipments ex Aldenham Ville' de la Ciotat ltmda, Roon, Bremen, Mareeba, Oruba, Bombata, Mmtaro, India, and Moana. . JAPANESE, SUBSIDIES. : Japan seems by no means to have abandoned belief in the virtue of maritime subventions According to the British Commercial Attache at Yokohama, the subsidies to shipping and shipbuildings contemplated in the Budget for 1908-9 compared as follows with those lor the. preceding year:— 1907-8. 190S-9. .£ £ Navigation subsidies—General -157,004 355,G54 For specified services ... ... 708,729 G58.1E0 • For extra services 44,935 Shipbuilding subsidy 81,513 203,701, ,£947,237 ,£1,262,150 An increase, of over .-£300,000 in a single year suggests, that the Japanese ' will offer inota strenuous competition than ever to other shipping. Completing, ono of the longest trips on record, tho American barque Kenilworth reached San Fii.neisco recently after "a voyage of 597 days, from Philadelphia, via Monte Video and Rio de Janeiro. The Kenilworth had a cargo of 2100 tons of coal bark. Sailing from Philadelphia August 15, 190G, the barque put into Monte Video for repairs on February 11 last year. Sho left tho latter port April 4, and, after experiencing a succession' of gales, ill which considerable damage was sustained, she put into Rio de Janeiro in a foul condition. After being dry-docked and made seaworthy, once again she sailed December 14, under Captain Taylor. Eouiid-ing-Cape Horn occupied fifteen days, during which fine weather prevailed. On December .30 a hurricane was run intn -vhich lasted £""

two days, throwing the vessel on lier beam ends, shifting her cargo to port, flooding tho cabins and forecastle, and • staving iii two boats. After tho storm subsided it was necessary to trim tho cargo. Fair weather pro-, vailed throughout tho. rest of tho voyage. Cap-" tain Amesbury. took the; vessel from Pliila. delphia as far as Rio de Janeiro'. •HOBART-NEW ZEALAND; TIMBER TRADE: The IJobart " Mercury " says that the timber merchants of that city are still'much "exercised over what amounts to blocking their trade with Now Zealand, owing, they declare, to the shipping companies not taking their consignments to the Dominion, because they 'do''not amount to a shipload at a time. They protest against the explanation offered that the steamer's trading between Hobart and New Zealand "are primarily mail and passenger boat's, and could not, therefore, afford the time necessary to handle quantities of timber to .be • distributed in retail fashion- over several Dominion ports; but if sufficient quantities were' offering to warrant the call'of a special steamer, it would be provided; that at the present the timber merchants are trying to carry 011 a retail trade with New. Zealand, while making Hobart tho distributing base." The timber merchants say that the' steamship companies have captured the trade, having driven sailing..boats out of it, and now actin? on the dog-in-the-manger principle. The Hobart-timber trade with New Zealand (says the "Mercury") is rapidly increasing, notably in split iialiugs and hardwood. Hundreds of thousands of .feet of timber are said to be now at tho mills awaiting shipment, whilst out of the barque Tropic there, were 259,000 ft. of deals for transhipment to New Zealand, and on the Hobart' wharves at present-there are said to be upwards of 150,000 ft. o£ doals arid about 150,000 ft. of Tasnianian timber awaiting to go to tho same destination. Some of it has been waiting since February last. Tho merchants complain, and seomingly with'reason, that the difficulty of, transit is a great check to tho, development of what, with adequate facilities, is likely to be a great trade with New, Zealand. Tele--grams are being received from .the Dominion pressing for the timber, and the .. exporter* are helpless. Mr. W. H.
