RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS
EXPLANATION BY.. INSPECTORGENERAL OF SCHOOLS. (BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ' Auckland, April 29. Air. G. Hogben, Inspector-Gelieral . of Schools, : is at present in Auckland for the purpose of meeting the Research Scholarship Board.' As a result of his visit a research scholarship will' bp offered at once, for which anyone qualified in the Auckland university district'may oiiter. The object of the scholarship' is to deal with subjects' in. which research is likely to be of economic value to the industries ■of the Dominion.' This is a new departure in New Zealand. ' Candidates for this scholarship will be able to make a'choico from, a list already published or. from somo kindred subject " which the candidate himself'may choose. In this connection Mr. Hogben, pointed out. to-day that tho life history of food fishes, a, snbjcct which ccrtain people are anxious should he included, is "as a matter of fact, already included in tho list. ■ The research scholarship is not a prize for research done, but is designed to'givo an opportunity to qualified persons making researches. It consists of £100 a year, and all expenses in. connection with laboratory, books of instructions, and neefssary travelling disbursements. To win the scholarship candidates must have shown in their course.'that they have' sufficient scientific training to enable them to undertake the research, arid-they must have also shown themselves to be capable of doing original work. .
