DEATH OF. THE REV. BENJAMIN • WAITGII. . The death of the l'.ov. Benjamin Waugh occurred at Westclitt-on-Soa 'on-'March 11. Mr. \Vau2ll, who was-founder of tho National Society for tho ' Prevention of Cruelty to Children, hr.d been in failing health for some time, and his death, which took place in the presence of members of his family, was not wholly. unexpected. . ,Ho was .ii-'od G9, and was a native of Skinton, Yorkshire. Ho was educated- at Airedale College, /Bradford, and in 1865 joined the-Congregational ministry, retiring from active pastorate in 18S7. lie was a member of the London School Board from 1870 to 1876, and in 1884 nromoted tho National Society , for the Prevention of Cruelty (0 Children, in . connection with whose operations 011 behalf of countless little ones his nr.me will ever be liorne in grateful remembrance. 111 1905 ho resigned tho directorship of the society, and became consulting director. Devotion to tho child was l.lie keynote of the career of one who was justly termod. the " Children's Champion," and this lie expressed very forcibly in tho following remark, which he made in reply to a question regarding the secret; of the success of tho National Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Children. "in the child," lie said, "there is a'conquering power that every human being feels. 'J'lio need of the child is our rallying point, tlio Bitfiering of the child is our inspiration, the relief of the child is our aim, and the power of the child our stronghold."
