The Lower Hutt Council wrote stating .that tho present' system of allocation the levy for charitable aid ,purposes in the Wellington and Wairarapa Charitable Aid' Districts was in its opinion unsatisfactory, and suggested that the qu'estionof the system should be brought before the next meetinc of the Municipal Conference for consideration. As tho whole Question of charitable .aid is to be' reviewed by Parliament, the Mayor moved that the matter stand over. This was agreed to. Messrs. Gibbons Bros.,' engineers, wrote advising 'that they had shipped the gas' material per s.s. Indraghiri and s.s Tongariro. ' ; , i A.: Ictttif.. was received from the Borough Engineer, Mr. W. H. Cook, in reference to the removal of the Navals' boat-shed and skids. The Engineer understood that the Navals wanted the skids strengthened, and two sets of plans were prepared and submitted to them for approval. . Tho Committee, of the Navals agreed to contribute the sum of £50 towards the timber'required for strengthening purposes, and- tenders .were invited for the work. Before entering upon thp'.work Mr...Cook wrote to the Navals to the'effect that'/the offer should-be in'writing, and.a 'reply came to hand-that Captain Free-, man would not agree to any expenditure "on:, account of tho skids.The position was thus, altered . between' : the Council' and the - con-' tractor, and'the Engineer opened iip negotiations with tho latter with the object of amending the price, .the results being as followsßemoving shed' and' re-erecting as per original contract,. £60; removing and re-erecting skids; new price, J§7s; txital, £135. A reduction' was thus made from £195 to. £135. The Mayor moved, and Councillor Smith seconded,<'that ~ the work be done in, strict accordance with the agreement entered into with the . Navals. Mr. R;' Colquitt wrote-offering to plant trees on a vacant piece, of land, .'corner of Gear .Street arid'Petone Avenue, and asking the Council's assistance to keep the' same in order.
