Council that after April 30 tho Department's • officers will cease to- register places in the city in which,milk is sold, or inspect: milk, sold- in such-places. At tho Magistrate's Court to-day a man of about" middle age, named Leonard' Lotter, pleaded guilty to obtaining money by means of valueless cheques from John: Martin. (Gisborne) £20, Walter Findlay (Napier) £10, Partridge, and Co. (Auckland) '£11, 195., Jasper Montgomery (Hamilton) £10, 'James M'Keown (Palmerston North) £10, Farmers' Co-operative Society (Wanganui) £3,' Daniel O'Brien (New! Plymouth)' £3. The accused was sentenced to twelves imprisonment on tho first, charge, and to-six. months on each of the' others, sentences to be concurrent. ■ V;. OTAGO EDUCATION STATISTICS. ■ :/ Dunctiln, April 27. The educational statistics for the quarter ended' March 31 show a' marked increase in the attendance in the Otago schools during the three months. 'The number of ! 'pupils on the'rolls at tho beginning of tho quarter was 18,054, and at the end of the. quarter 19,398. The average attendance, was 17,417, being 492 more ,th an the total for the/.'previous quarter, and 543 more than 'for;.the March', Quarter of. 1907.-• There were.'23l schools in operation in the district, employing 211 male and 304 female teachers," besides 23-teachers of needlework.- .
