MIRAMAR BOROUGH COUNCIL.
OPENING UP KARAKA BAY. The Miramar Borough Council met last night-. There were present the -Mayor (Mr. C. J. Crawford)' and Councillors Bell, M'Leod, Brodie, Chase-Morris, East, and Witt. = 1 ■ Councillor Brodie, in accordance with notice, moved as follows: — , "That the engineer be asked to furnish an estimate along with a report on. the cost of extending tho Seatoun tram line along to a point Known as Marshall's Old Store in Worser Bay, and that tho Council take stops to have the extension carried out as early as possible." The mover stated that the portion of tho Borough which tho proposed extension would serve was at present isolated. Tho extension, if it were carried out, would not only meet the requirements of resident's in Ivaraka Bay, but would also result in the augmentation of tho tramways revenue. Councillor M'Leod seconded tho motion pro forma. Tho Mayor thought ■ that the present terminus was not a suitable one. In northerly weather the locality was very much exposed. If the lino wore extended a.greater number of visitors would be attracted. Ho would certainly like to see the' question inquired into. . , • Councillor' Chase-Morris: It would mean that-wo would have to go in for another, loan?' Tie Mayor: Yes. ' Councillor Chase-Morris: Unless the amount required is included; in a general loan I don't think it would bo agreed to. Tho Mayor: That' depends, upon .whether-. wo could show a good balance-sheet. r •The Mayor pointed out that two routes wero suggested—one via Church Street, tho other, via! Stafford Street. Tho distance to I Marshall's Old Storo via tho former would be 67' chains,! and via the latter, 74£ chains. | Councillor TJrodic did not see why the cost of the proposed work could not bo provided for' out. of revenue. . .Tho Mayor: I am afraid not. It would cost at l«ist' £"000. ' Councillor Qhasc-Morris moved as an amendment:— ".That a committee, consisting of Councillors Brodie, East, and M'Leod, bo set up to consider tho question of providing bettor communication with Karaka 1 Bay!", The mover stated that it might bo found advisable to establish a motor 'bus service. .- The amendment,.' which was seconded by Councillor Witt was carried unanimously. Councillor M'Leod then moved, in accordance with notice:— " ( . |.' "That an estimate bo'obtained ;of the cost of constructing a tunnel s'uitoblo for nedestrian traffic from Karaka Bay Road to Karaka Road at a point below its intersection with!Totara Road." The second-class stonc'at Miramar Ltd-.'s "quarry" was of poor: quality; "but the first-class was practically: similar to that at Seatoun, with the exception that,it contained about 10 per cent, of! poorqr 1 quality mixed with it. Moro than half of the at Miramar Ltd.'s .quarry was of. second-class quality. In his opinion, tho.stone a!t'Mr. Crawford's quarry was of •moro uniformly: good quality ' than that ■ at Miramar Ltd;'s quarry.' -.•: / . ••: Messrs. Patcrson and 'Hanify, in'- their joint report,-stated (1) -That tho metal from tho Seatoun quarry was high-grade firstclass metal; (2) that the metal from Miramar North . was low-grade first-class road metal.' Owing to'tho difference in the ten dered prices they had no hesitation in saying that it would be a' distinct gain to tho borough to accept Mr'. Crawford's tender for metal.- • ' \ '!'.' GENERAL. .
