UPPER HUTT TOWN'DISTRICT.
• " 9 .v;'- / ELECTION TO-DAY;' 1 To-day. is a red-letter'day in the history of,.the -.Opper. Hutt. .After 65- years (most of 'which it. has' been under the dominance of.'the Hutt v County. Council) itis •to do.-' clare, by the election of seven representatives, its .independence. To the two oldest residents—Messrs: George and James Brown —is : due the credit of bringing about, .a severance from Hutt. county control. Today nine candidates plead the' suffrages of the ratepayers,'and two must' content .themselves. with .defeat, however narrow the'margin. . - Only some' hundred and . seventy can vote, at this the first election, so the. polling will be light. Originally, only seven candidates offered themselves, thus- obviating the necessity-" of-an' election. Then two' independent..' candidates- ■ (Messrs... W-. *R. - Keys and F. ; !Wilkie) stepped in, and ,thereby secured,',to the electors a choice in ~-the matter. By'a mistake as to the date' fo£ the .nominations three-: more intending' candidates (Messrs. J. J.. Geange; E. Greenwood, and-E. AVilkie) were debarred from, standing by the. returning officer (Mr. Angus J. M'Curdy). • • . ■ ' ' •
