LOST OVERBOARD.
/ TRAGEDY ON THE lONIC. When, a fortnight out from Plymouth, and a week off Capetown, pn March 22, a third-, class passenger by the lonic, naiped Mrs. Gilmoui;, wife of Mr. «K Gilmour, an assisted immigrant, committed. suicide by projecting herself through a port-hole, with the result that she fell into tlio sea and was drowned. It appears that; owing to sickness, : the -de--ceased was unable to bring olio of" hor children with her, and the necessity of having to leave'the child behind caused her to fret considerably during tlio passage. ; The alarm was given "by a third : class passenger, who saw the woman, protruding from the port-hole. Before ho realised her intention, . the deceased, had thrown herself into the sea. He raised the alarm at once. The steamer's .engines wero stopped,; and within two': minuses the port cutter was lowered, and sent away in .charge of tho. third officer (Mr. \V. Poll), and a life : buby, bearing, a Holmes.' flare-light;, was. thrown pycrboard. The cutter parched around in tlio heavy soa, but could not see anV trace of the unfortunate, woman.'' " . ',
Mr. Gilmour was not wjtli his wife , at the time tho rash act was committed, and it was not until tho third-class passengers were .mustered and tallied off that it was realised who tho missing passongor . was. The incident caused quite a depression over the ship for n time. ■
