FIRE DRILL.
(BI TIS LEG It ATH—PRESS ASSCCIATIOK.) ChrlstchUrch, April 16.; This afternoon Captain Hannah,. Government Fire Inspector of Public 'Buildings, visited the East Christchurch/School, which has number of about 1100, for.'tho purpose of witnessing demonstrations of fire drill.' At the first demonstration, .over 500 children in the main school were inarched out through one exit in 2min. 20sec.j and at.the second through two exits in lmin. 32sec. The third demonstration was at tho infant school, whero over 400 children marched out in 50sec. The. main school is a, dou bio-storied structure, ,and Captain Hannah .found, on 'making an inspection of: the building afterwards, that two stairways leading from tho main .corridor upstairs were so winding that in case of panic a terrible', disaster must occur. Ho also found tliat; all the. classroom doors opened: inward, instead' of out•ward. He urged tho chairman of the com; mittee, who was present at the demonstration, to have these defects removed without delay, and tho chairman promised that the matter would be attendccl to at the forthcoming meeting of ; the school committee.
