By a fire at Mataura three places in Bridge Street were burned opposite those i destroyed last week. The fire started'in tho back of Mr. F. Thorn's bootmaker's 'shop, which had been occupied as. a dwelling, but was unoccupied at tho timo of the fire. Tho flames spread to Mr. T. F. Quilter's . fruit and confectionery ' shop.These places were destroyed, but. Mr. i Quilter's cordial factory at.the rear was saved.' Mr. B. Downes's' blacksmith's and implement' promises nest door wero burned. Theso contained a considerable amount of machinery owned by Mr. J. Lowtlen, sen., and leased by Mr. Dow'nes. The fire is supposed to have arisen from a defective chimney. The insurances-'arp: : —Mr. Howden,-sen., machinery and plant,'£lso in tho Royal, and buildings, '£200 in the Royal. The loss is abovo £300. Mr. Downcs's stock, £100 in the United. Tho loss is above £60. Simpson's furnituro warehouse this evening at 7.20, which was extinguished only after the place had been flooded with water. The insurances are £150 in the South British and £750 in the lloyal Assurance., The furnituro and stock was not much damaged,' but the extent cf the loss cannot be ascertained until after, an overhaul.
