NEW MAIL STEAMERS
TONNAGE 12,000,: 'SPEED . 20''KNOTS. - The Commonwealth, Government/ has received advice that the, plans 'and : specifications of the five - new steamers, which arete bo built , by the Orient. Steamship "Company, in fulfilment of the terms of the new mail contract',' were submitted to Captain Collins, Commonwealth , representative; •in London,i last month, and in tho main wero approved of by him. Tiio specifications showed that, instead of tho vessels being of at least 11,000 tons (gross registered tonnage.),. and equal to a speod of not less' than J 7 knots per hour, tliov would bo nearer 12,000 tons, and of a' speed oloser to 20 knots per hour. Owing to tho fact that Captain Collins . had a number of suggestions to make respecting refrigerating accommodation, the plans and specifications wero not. finally approved;. ■ '■ • : .* Provision is to bo made for tho erection of wireless telegraphic apparatus on the upper dcclc of each steamer. The mail contract providos that the vessels must be fitted with these installations, within six months after the ■ Fetjernl Government has established stations : at any point .011 tho Australian - coast between Fremantle - aiid .Brisbane. * 1 ' .
