NEW P. AND O. LINERS FOR AUSTRA-

LIAN TRADE. Further information, -though unofficial, has been received respecting the four passenger steamers being constructed by Jlessrs. liarland ■ and Wolff, Queen's Island, Belfast, for the P. and 0. Co., Ltd., says;the "Shipping Index," These vessels are to be each of 14,C00 tons, consequently nearly 1000 larger thai! the' G.M.S. Grosser Kurfuerst, which is the largest steamer which has visited Australia. It wns known the vessels were to bo of an improved type to the II class; which 1 have attained'such a remarkable popularity with the travelling- pilblic, but, as far as passengor ac-commodation-goes, they will mark as great an advantage on the Marmora class as those did on the China and India class. .As far, as practicable,, all, those luxuries provided on tho big steamers running between Europe and tho .United States will be placed. The new boats will bo something more than a reply to tho Asturias, though when- their details were decided upon it is quite probablo that the termination .of . tho, arrangement between tho Orient Co.;and the Royal Mail Steamer Packet Co. was not regarded as so imminent as events have since proved it to be! In addition to the ordinary public rooms,, it is stated that thero will be other provisions, the exact nature of which has > not yet been, allowed to transpire, which will make each steamer,a floating palace of a nature never approached by any vessel which has up to tho present • navigated tho Suez Canal. The steamers will be able, if required, to maintain a sea speed of 20 knots, and each will be provided with wirolcss tolegrapliic installation. .

The : Government' pteamer Tutanekai leaves 'Wellington this* morning for, The Brothers and Pallise'r lighthouses; ' • Tho Shaw-Savill steamers , Kia Ora, from Port Chalmers, and the Mamari, fromLyttelton, are due in Wellington to-day. ■ ■ The' Den of Euthven, is : due. here from Port Chalmers to-morrow, and,'after loading, leaves for Vancouver, via Auckland, on Saturday. .'Mr. D. Dnlglcish has rejoined tho Maori as assistant purser, vice Mr. Young, who transferred to the Maitai.in a similar capacity. Mr..,D. S. Gow joined the. Moeraki in Sydney as assistant purser, vice. Mr. T. P. Kearney, -who!'enters the Union Company's, office in Sydney. ' The Stornibird is fixed to leave Wellington this; evenirig, -with; a'party of, excursionists,' bound for Peloriis - Sounds. The vessel/ will return; to Wellington, on; Easter, Monday. ./ Shipping" returns'dealing v.'ith the number of. vessels.that arrived at Sydney during the past three months show that 557 vessels, of 1,123,6-10 tons register,.entered Port Jackson during t;iat period! ■' 1 The turret-deck steamer . Orange Branch is expected' to leave Auckland to-aay for Wellington,' and should reach' here on 1 Saturday. The New Zealand - Shipping Company is the local , agent for the vessel.

The New Zealand, Shipping Company's steamer Rnkaia, which left Picton yesterday morning, for JWaitara, goes thence to Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington, sailing finally from here about tho end r of this month.

The Huddart-Parker steamer.: Wimmera, which leaves Wellington. to-day for Sydney, via Northern ports,'' will not take any.- Ndpier cargo. She arrives there'' on Good Friday morning, and leaves for Gisborne, which port will be worked the same evening. A Sydney exchange of April 9 states that when it was announced • that • the "American six-masted schooner Everett G. Griggs was coming to Sydney from Antofagasta for- cleaning before proceeding: to Newcastle to load Brown's coaLfor San Francisco, a shipmaster that, had seen her at the West Coast port before his/vessel sailed, stated that she would make a protracted passage, owing to tho great amount of marine growth that was attached to her sides and bottom. Consequently, no notice was taken of the long trip she was making until she was roportcd as being 100 days out; then a. little- uneasiness, _:,which has not yet been allayed, beoime' noticeable in shipping circles, owing to her non-appearance. Tho Everett G. Griggs loft Antofagasta on December 28 last, and is now 103 days' out to-day.
