Nominations for all evoiits at the Marlborough Racing Club's Autumn with the secretary (Mr. C. J. W. Griffiths), 011 Saturday, April 18, at 9 p.m. By the Ulimaroa, which-left Lyttelton 011 Friday, D.'J. Prico shipped four yearlings to Melbourne —three by Stepniak and one by St. Ambrose. Idealist, Seafield, Maui, and.Afaaluia joined the 'steamer at the Bluff yesterday. A privato telegram received from Price yesterday afternoon stated that all the horses ivero well.
It is advertised that, for .a' race, to bo run noxt season in Germany, the prize will bn tho Gold Cup run for at Ascot in 1836. This is the tropliy woti by the great .Touchstone in his first victory in the race. ...
T. Pritchard will not bp' present at the Feilding meeting next .week, and, in-his absence, H. Cairns will pilot Aorangi over,.tho sticks..
Tho well-known hurdle- horseman, yJ. Cameron, who had his leg hrokpn -a couple'of months ago, whilo schooling' Oryx, is now recovered from the '-accident.' Ha leaves for Sydney by this week's boat, and may take up his residence 1 there. Tho news that Fleetfoot is slightly amiss is not altogether surprising, for when the Clanranald filly' pulled up after tho Middlo Park' Plate, it looked very doubtful that-she would stand, another preparation. ; She appeared to bo quite sound during the last low weeks,- but< sho was being given .very light work, i.- ; \ : A. Shcarshy takes Vasa, Moscow, Flamen, and Aorangi to Fcilding next Saturday. After tho Feilding Meeting. the Levin trainer will take several yearlings in hand, anil. the 'Grafton mare Truce will alio"; be placed in commission again. ' The yearlings are tho five hundred guineas colt-Polymor-v phous by Multiform—Rumour, a colt by Pilgrim's Progress—Parera, and 'a filly, by Pilgrim's Progress—.'liolo. Rock Ferry, from the. Karamu stable,. is said:to bo a rather, speedy youngster, and will 119 doubt inako a good showing in the Russloy Plate at Riccarton. Millionaire, one of the • Chokobore Lodge; representatives in this raco, run very well in the Jackson Stakes, and Beneform and Miss Mischief,; two of the other Candidates, have both showii :,recont winning form, so there is every prospect of a fii'st : class race. . Martyrium is ongaged in the Epsom Welter, one mile',' on" Eastor. and tho Yaldhurst Welter, . seven furlongs, oil ■ tho Tuesday. A: milo; is-probably a, .little too far for tho Birkenhead-" mare, but' up to seven furlongs she' i f s one of t the best in tho Dominion at welter weights',.
Thero is another'-payment -to bo made for the C.J.C. Groat Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps on Thursday night. . '
Lapland- is tho only candidate engaged in tho Great Autumn that started in last year's event. He finished a long way behind the placed horses last year, but ho has. improved considerably sinco then. • In November last, ho ran third .in the New Zealand Cup, and a month ago ho won tho Timaru Cup from a big field. In the New Zealand Cup, ho beat Zimmerman, who was conceding hiiii 181b. Zimmerman has now to concede the Finland gelding 2-llb., and tho distance is half/a mile shorter.: At. the '.'difference in weight, Lapland' may be,able to make matters, interesting for his Karamu rival; 1
Another of tho lightweights-' that appears to be well treated is Sigiior. Thero is a good deal to bo said in favour of this ".'it-tie horse., Ho is exceptionally well-bred, being by Pilgrim's Progress from tho Trenton mare Ma Mie Rosette; fie belongs ;to Bruce Lowe's 31 family—not a'' brilliant family' by' "any means, but tho particular branch from which he springs has been represented by one or two excellent 'performers.- Ma Mie Rosette is half-sister to Mountain King, and a direct descendant of the Melbourne mare. Cauezou, winner of the One Thousand Guineas, Goodwood Cup twice, and Dohcaster Clip. Pilgrim's Progress sired some really good winners, both in Australia and' Now Zealand. Ho belonged to tho No. (1)-family, which at tho present time in England is actually sccond on the list as a winning siro family. ; Signor has already shown winning'form during the present season, and there is no doubt .'abouthis ability to stay; But lie' generally requires to be hard a ridden at ; the finish. Tho question is, will, little Jeffrey bq able to do him justice. ; '
Splash, engaged in the Nursery Handicap at Tauherinikau with Bst.. 51b., is .'a'-stable-, niato.of Contender. He showed fair form at the Napier Park meeting a month ago,'whero the company was a little better than it' is at the Wairarapa meeting. Tho weights for the first day's events :at the Wellington.Racing Club's meeting will'bo declared on Wednesday of nextweek. The Knight Errant fillv, Royal Maid), who has been off tho sceno sinco tho Christmas meetings, is engaged in a live-furlong race at Tauherinikau. Sho won the Scurry at Clarevillo last November. , Playinat-o's half-sister Mania, which did net quite run up to expectations at Wanganui or Dannevirke, is entered on both'days of tho Wairarapa meeting. , TIIO Rawson Stakes of niuo furlongs, weight for age, decided at tho Rosehill meeting 011 April 4,' was won by Poseidon. Tho other starters were Decolette, Welcome Trist, and Artful. . Grenadier (Soult—Hotolierina) won tho Hill Handicap at Flemington the, Saturday beforo last. He .was top weight with 9st. 131b.,. and defeated Corroboree, Akim Foo, and several other .jgood horses. Grenadier's owner missed the nominations for the Doncaster, but'tho'son of £>oult will be racing in the other handicap races at the Randwick meeting. At tho South Australian Jockey Club's meeting, which takes place in May, he has been allotted top weight in the Goodwood Handicap, the principal sprint event.. Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for all events at the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club's Autumn meeting close on Thursday evening next, April 16.
