BOXING.
1 : (By Merodby.) , The boxing.expert -of the "Manawatu Daily Times" talks back at the WellingtonAssociation as follows, and incidentally allows that the country, body is- fairly on its feet again. The' Manawatu Boxing Association, recently resuscitated with an amateur tourney, which from every .standpoint was a .success, does not intend to' 1 slumber again. ' Active preparations, have been already mado for the next evening's sport, which is to be held at tlio- Empire Hall on. Wednesday, April 15. Some £25 has been expended in securing proper ring fittings, etc., .to comply with tho rules. 'i'hcso include cork linoleum and packing for the. lloor,. padded posts and ropes, etc., which should bo much appreciated by competitors. Tho remarks mado at a recent meeting of the Wellington Boxing Association re a suggested professional contest ofi a doubtful nature, having been ■proposed to be held in Manawatu, meet with strong resentment from those controlling tho Manawatu Association, who never had such a-proposal submitted to them, and would not have countenanced it had it been placed be-, fore them. Tho criticism at tho Wellington Association meeting is therefore considered by tho Manawatu body to havo been' quito uncalled for. . It savoured of concocting a cock and bull story to obtain credit for having nippea an imaginary evil in the bud. The dominant personnel in tho. Manawatu Association is above suspicion in such matters'as "slinters," as.they are generally termod. Tho men at tho helm are animated by pure—love—of—the—amateur —sport only, and arb not likely to desert it •for the sako of shoddy professionalism, which i would bo sure to land tho Association among , tho. rocks' and shoals of general disapproval. It therefore is somewhat extraordinary to read in a Wellington' paper that "tho Wellington centre' was entitled .to - assist in pre- ' 'venting such contests-'taking' place in the. Manawatu district, ■ which wa3 under' tho jurisdiction of tho Wellington Centre." These remarks wero mado by Mr. CofFoy, hon. sec. .of tho latter body, whoso chief weakness is trying to get into tho limelight, irrespective of what that .light may show. . Nominations for tho forthcoming tourney under tlio auspices of tho Manawatu Association will close on April'l2. Contests will bo held for four classes, namely, bantam, light, welter and heavy weights. A magistrato at Verulam, Natal, has hold that an Englishman named. Micklewood was perfectly justified in shooting one of a ghng of Indian burglars who attack-id a native policeman. Private advFcos to hand from Home state ■that the designer of Shamrock IV had just 'met with a severe accident from which ho was not expected to recover. Whilst inspecting tho • Shamrock IV ho fell from the dock to the bottom of tho boat and was very dangerously, hurt.
