■ .-RIVER board 'meeting. ■ A meeting of thb Hutt - River Board , was held on Thursday-evening,'Mr: W. G. Foster, presiding. In .-his. monthly-, report, the foreman stated that since tho last meeting there had bocn only one, small" fresh, in. the; river, when it rose, 4ft.' 6in.' during'.-the southerly gale This was'insufficient to cause any dani- ' age, but it improved the' new'ciits somewhat by deepening them.' The ; defence works had been overhauled.'' He advised that nine birch piles' should be procured,' and that the .stopbanl: required 'to :b'e cleared' of gorse..and vegetation. •. ' ' . The chairman's report on tlib recent . visit' ' of inspection of the district under the Board's jurisdiction was. ' read and . subsequently adopted. In it ho stated that the engineer was authorised to. spend £50 on the removal of shingle tho north end of Gefir Island, and to have the diversion cut cleared out. Tho growing- accumulation of shingle was found to be'.very extensive at certain points-in the river, noticeably at'the reach abovo Kingdon's Beach, near where tho new bridge is .to ,be erected-by the Hutt Borough Council. .- , r Tho matter of the extension .of. the-district under tho Board's jurisdiction camo up for discussion, and Messrs. Orton Stevoiis and T. A. Petcrkin were deputed to interview, the Taitai landowners,_ with the'object of,' if possible, obtaining their consent to inclusion in tho Board's district. ■ '* • . ' ■ ' Mr. E. o.'Clayton,-who; has been foreman to the Board.for two and a'half-years, sent in his resignation, as ;ho had-been'appointed foreman to the Devonport;Borough Council, Auckland. The resignation' was' accepted with regret, the. clerk being instructed that, in writing to Mr. Clayton to that' effect, the Board desired to make special mention of his past services. ■ " At a meeting held in the Municipal Buildings last evenjng, a Petone Chess and Draughts Club was formed. About twentyfive members were enrolled, and it was decided to meet every Wednesday and Satur-. ' day evening at- 7.30 o'clock. Promises of • support have been given, and , a very strong ' club is assured. ' '' . . i
