A NEW PROFESSION FOR WOMEN.
A now profession has arison for women— that of advertisement writing. ' Most commercial houses advertise, more or less—competition forces them to do so, and, in proportion to their advertising is their trado.Onco upon a time tho owner or manager of a concern, if he advertised at all, did it all himself. • It took; the form of periodical announcements concerning his goods through various mediums. He made little or 110 attempt at catching the eye, at word-painting, at typographical display; if ho used illustrations, stock cuts, supplied by his printor, were sufficient for his requirements j now, howover;-all that is altered, advertising'has becomo an art. The manager of a. largo business cannot spare the timo or thought necessary for bis advertising; having decided how much money bo will allow for it; lie employs a specialist to make good' uso of it—an advertiser who must give his entiro attention to the work. In a lesser concern tho manager may do his own advertising, but an alilo business man has not, necessarily, the, gift of expression, the constructive faculty, nor tbo artistic perception, which go to the successful building of attractive advertisements.' and it pays.
him. better, ..in many oases, , to go\to. a professional; ' The work is not sufficient to his engaging an on .his permanent staff, hut lie goes to 0110 who makes a living out of doing piecework for similar firms'. . . 1 , ' \ .■: Nine-tenths of the 'articles advertised in' the daily' papers and massiigincs aro fought entirely, or partlyvbv women —women, as buyers, know what is clesirablo in. those articles; therefore, they aro eminently fitted to demonstrate these points. In America to-day many women aro leaking a living as advertisement-writers, and, at least, one large lirm. in Sydney employs a woman to advertise women's goods. ' Beforo many years liaye passed, it is probable that many .women here will hold similar positions, in which the work is both -well paid andinteresting. . \ Men,'at present, do most of the advertis-\ ing in Sydney, but thero is 110 reason why women should not enter the'field where they, at least, will receive equal remuneration; it „is at present a fairly open field, where thoso who early establish themsolves aro likely to take the strongest position.—"Sydney Morning Herald."
