LABOUR MATTERS.
- At the half-yearly meeting of the- Building Trades Labourers' Union, the following office-bearers-were*elected forf the ensuing period President, Mr. F. Browne; vicepresident, Mr. D. Conchie; secretary, Mr. W. J. Lyons; treasurer, Mr. A. P. Jones; trustees, M'". Corbett and F. ltaynor; auditors, Messrs. D. Conchie and F: I Ashonden. Tho report and balance-sheet showed that the-TJnion whs making satis-1 factory progress, and membership' was on ! tho increase. A sum of £5 was voted, to as-! sist the Blackball Miners, making a, total-of £15 sent by the Union. • At a well-attended meeting of the Potone Branch of the Wellington Drivers' Union, held on Wednesday night, the following resolution was carried unanimously:— , "That this section considers that tho ■ time has arrived when all progressive parties should unite with the" object of returning to Parliament a direct Labour man —and .this meeting forms itself, into a committee to 'further the object.". At the , monthly meeting of tho Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants (Thorndon Branch), the following resolution was passed:— . . "That this meeting regrets the action of the majority of conference delegates in dispensing with the .services of Mr. ' J. T. M. Hornsby as editor of th« 'Rail- - way Review"; also, that we place on record the valuable services rendered to tho society by Mr. Hornsby during the ' timo he was • editor of our paper; also, . ■that this branch has no confidence' in the-late conference in its methods of electing the Executive Council." / The principal business at the weekly meeting of the Trades Council held last night was tho receipt of letters from several Unions intimating that, they were sending £5 and upwards towards tho Blackball funds. One Union stated that it would send £5 weekly. Only one refusal was received in answer to requests to contribute to the Blackball fund.. A communication was received from Blackball extending thanks for assistance rendered, and stating that there was lio chango in the position of affairs. Professor Vladimir V. do Sviatlowsky, of tho Imperial Univorsity of St: Petersburg, was present at'tho meeting of tho Council, and promised to'give an address at tho next meeting on " Tho Political Economy of Russia." A Gazette notice states that the registration of tho Potone Milk-vendors' Industrial Union of Employers Has bccu cancelled.
