CONSUMPTION.

STATEMENT BY DR. MASON. (BT TELEGRAPH —FItESS ASSOCIATION.). i Auckland, April 7. Dr. Mason, Chief Health Offioor, who arrived from Wellington to-day, was waited upon by a representative of the Press in reference to the subject of consumptive sanatoria touched upon by a deputation to the Minister for Health in the South. Dr. Mason remarked that the results at The Waikato Sanatorium, which had been mentioned by the Minister, as a demonstration Ration, had proved eminently satisfactory, tho pereontago of cures having been approximately 21 per cent., which, considering tho general lateness at which cases-were received, . would comparo favourably with the continental institutions. Tho Otago Hospital Board's suggestion that a sanatorium be established in Contral Otago by tho Government was entirely opposed to tho usual policy by which each Board looked after its own sect. The Cambridgo institution was a national ono, and recoived from all parts of tho Dominion pationts, who, it was believed, would benefit by that particular climate. "I am glad to note,", said tho doctor, "that, after many days, Auckland is beginning to realiso its responsibilities in this direction. Tliero aro at present eleven cases at the Costley Institute, and I am pleased to soo tho effort being mado by tho Board to copo with the matter. Provision has been ma-do in Taranaki, Nelson,, Wellington, Whangaroi, Thame®, and Invercargill. Christchurch is carrying out a scliomo for tho samo end, and it now-only remains'for tho two centres, Dunodin and Auckland, to fall into line. I am strongly of tho opinion that Auckland should make accommodation for at least fifty patients within tho district, and thus put an end to tho present state of affairs.' Of courso, there is not nearly sufficient accommodation in New Zealand for all consumptive patients, but tho various districts by. doing their sbaro aro gradually increasing it to meet the requirements."-
