Insurgent Arabs on tho banks of the Tigris subjected tho British steamer Blosso Lynch bo a. heavy riflo fire. A Turkish patrol steamor accompanying the Blosso Lynch returned tho insurgents' fire. Two of tho Blosso Lynch's passengers woro killed- and several wounded. In responso to Britain's emphatic demand for redress, the .Porte' promises to punish tho aggressors. The Tigris, in Asiatic Turkey, the great tributary of the great Euphrates (which flows into the Persian Gulf), is navigable for a great distance by light draught boats. One authority states that "it is navigable for vessels drawing 4ft. of water from the Shat-el-Arab to the ruins of Opis, 50 miles north of Bagdad. Regular communication is maintained by steamers of 3 to 4it. draught to Bagdad, four to six days being required for the.-journey up stream from Buzrah, and .three to five days for that down stream." The Blosse Lyncli, belonging to the Euphrates and Tigris Steam Navigation Company, is specially suited for the river work, being an, iron paddle steamer of Cft. draught, and ICG cons.
